Azure Backup uses Protected Instances as the unit for billing customers for the Backup Software management. Additionally, all Backup Storage gets billed at Block Blob storage rates. Details are available at: http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/backup.

Questions that are frequently asked about the pricing are:

1. What is a protected instance? How do I calculate the number of instances I have?

2. How do I estimate the amount of Azure storage my backups will consume?

Some of these are answered in the FAQ on the pricing page. Helping you estimate the Azure Backup bill is the purpose of this excel sheet.

For DPM servers and datasources

You use a script on the DPM server to estimate the Protected Instances and the Backup storage. Download the script from here: https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Estimating-Azure-Backup-e0d4abbc/
