Windows Server Essentials - Configuration Troubleshooter

After a recent support case came up, where i could not see the wrong settings via the GUI, i decided to write a script to check things for me. This tool will check IIS and Certificates.

  • Works Like A Charm On Server 2016

    • Works like a charm on Server 2016. Didn't help with my issue (backup task did not complete successfully) but that isn't the scripts fault.
Thanks Robert for making this, very helpful and very useful to an admin when the GUI is awful and doesn't tell you anything at all.
Now to continue on with my backup issue search.
Any chance you have a script that just disabled Essentials client and file history backups completely? I run server backup on everything including clients and now Essentials is trying to do double duty.

    • I've followed the directions and the title happens. Any ideas?
    • Which OS are you running on?
  • Server 2012 R2 w/essentials role

    • I upgraded a server 2012 essentials server to server 2012 standard (keeping the essentials role). When I run this, it thinks it is checking a client, and only checks the ports. Is there any way to force this to run the entire script?
    • Ill need to update it will do that today.
    • Is this 2012 or 2012 R2?
  • I can't get past policy blocks to run this?

    • the connector script log tell me it has failed because of certificates so I wanted to run this script to understand why but I am new to powershell and I can't get it do run.
    • You need to right click the file and unblock it
run PS as admin, type in,
      set-executionpolicy remotesigned
then hit enter and type Y.
then run the script again :)
As well the script needs to be in a folder like serverfolders for example, not c:\windows\system32 type .\EssentialsTester.ps1 to launch it.

    • I do not have much experience in the area's of scripts and powershell. I am having an issue with multiple client pc's losing the Trust Relationship with the domain. After searching the forums and TechNet for information I found some references to your script , but... No matter what I do I keep getting this error
      I followed instructions to change the execution policy;
      PS C:\Windows\system32> Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned
      And then ran the script
      PS C:\Windows\system32> F:\ServerFolders\Networking\EssentialsTester.ps1
      F:\ServerFolders\Networking\EssentialsTester.ps1 : File F:\ServerFolders\Networking\EssentialsTester.ps1
cannot be loaded. The file F:\ServerFolders\Networking\EssentialsTester.ps1 is not digitally signed. The
script will not execute on the system. For more information, see about_Execution_Policies at
      At line:1 char:1
      + F:\ServerFolders\Networking\EssentialsTester.ps1
      + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
          + CategoryInfo : SecurityError: (:) [], PSSecurityException
          + FullyQualifiedErrorId : UnauthorizedAccess
      what am I doing wrong?
    • You need to unblock the file, go to the properties and click unblock.

    • I managed to run the script. It noted that the application pools should be started.
Certificates etc were ok however the connector still fails with Failed to download from server: System.Net.WebException: The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel. ---> System.Security.Authentication.AuthenticationException: The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure.

    • This Q&A is probably best left to just questions about the script itself.
For your issue can i ask you to open a thread on the forum?
