Windows Server Essentials - Configuration Troubleshooter

After a recent support case came up, where i could not see the wrong settings via the GUI, i decided to write a script to check things for me. This tool will check IIS and Certificates.

    • Hi Robert,
I've upgraded our Windows Server 2016 Essentials to Server 2016 Standard.
I ran option 5 and received the following:
      Checking Installed Roles..
      Roles Missing : 5
      Role Name : WDS
      Role Name : WDS-Deployment
      Role Name : WDS-Transport
      Role Name : CMAK
      Role Name : RSAT-RemoteAccess-Mgmt
I'm assuming I can ignore since we aren't using the built-in deployment tools and using 3rd party remote software?
    • Yes it is just comparing against the default.
  • Client DNS Server error

    • Hi,
When I run the tool internally, (but still using our domain name), everything comes up green.
But when I run it on a remote PC, I get an error on the Client DNS Server. Everything else is green.
I don't quite understand what it's testing with the "client DNS server" and consequently not sure how to fix it? Any thoughts please?
    • It is checking to make sure you are using the server for dns, otherwise it shows an error.
On a remote pc it would be a false positive.
    • So, it should be saying FAILED on the remote PC? Sorry I don't understand your "false positive" comment.
At this stage I can't get the Launchpad Connector working (stays grey). The only failed message via your tester is the Client DNS server. So am trying to work out if that's related to the Lanchpad connector not working or if it's irrelevant.
  • Does it work for AD Certificate Services?

    • I have downloaded this tool and run on CA subordinate server.
Result is not very usable. Is there a server version of this script to check CA like in this link:
** Essentials Server Configuration Tester (Client Version) **
OS Detected: Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Standard
Testing Service Ports on : CAINT01
TCP 80 (Used for Websites) : OK
TCP 443 (Used for Websites) : OK
TCP 6602 (Used for Status) : Error
TCP 8912 (Used for Backups) : Error
TCP 65520 (Used for Mac Website) : Error
TCP 65500 (Used for CA Website) : Error
Review your results, items in red should be investigated.
    • What are you trying to do?
The tool is specifically for Windows Server Essentials.

    • Works like a charm on Server 2016. Didn't help with my issue (backup task did not complete successfully) but that isn't the scripts fault.
Thanks Robert for making this, very helpful and very useful to an admin when the GUI is awful and doesn't tell you anything at all.
Now to continue on with my backup issue search.
Any chance you have a script that just disabled Essentials client and file history backups completely? I run server backup on everything including clients and now Essentials is trying to do double duty.
    • +1, very useful, thnks!
    • You can disable client backup in the dashboard in the properties of each client, if thats what you mean.

    • Which OS are you running on?

    • I upgraded a server 2012 essentials server to server 2012 standard (keeping the essentials role). When I run this, it thinks it is checking a client, and only checks the ports. Is there any way to force this to run the entire script?
    • Ill need to update it will do that today.
    • Is this 2012 or 2012 R2?
  • I can't get past policy blocks to run this?

    • the connector script log tell me it has failed because of certificates so I wanted to run this script to understand why but I am new to powershell and I can't get it do run.
    • You need to right click the file and unblock it
run PS as admin, type in,
      set-executionpolicy remotesigned
then hit enter and type Y.
then run the script again :)
As well the script needs to be in a folder like serverfolders for example, not c:\windows\system32 type .\EssentialsTester.ps1 to launch it.
  • This script is not digitally signed

    • I do not have much experience in the area's of scripts and powershell. I am having an issue with multiple client pc's losing the Trust Relationship with the domain. After searching the forums and TechNet for information I found some references to your script , but... No matter what I do I keep getting this error
      I followed instructions to change the execution policy;
      PS C:\Windows\system32> Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned
      And then ran the script
      PS C:\Windows\system32> F:\ServerFolders\Networking\EssentialsTester.ps1
      F:\ServerFolders\Networking\EssentialsTester.ps1 : File F:\ServerFolders\Networking\EssentialsTester.ps1
cannot be loaded. The file F:\ServerFolders\Networking\EssentialsTester.ps1 is not digitally signed. The
script will not execute on the system. For more information, see about_Execution_Policies at
      At line:1 char:1
      + F:\ServerFolders\Networking\EssentialsTester.ps1
      + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
          + CategoryInfo : SecurityError: (:) [], PSSecurityException
          + FullyQualifiedErrorId : UnauthorizedAccess
      what am I doing wrong?
    • You need to unblock the file, go to the properties and click unblock.

    • I managed to run the script. It noted that the application pools should be started.
Certificates etc were ok however the connector still fails with Failed to download from server: System.Net.WebException: The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel. ---> System.Security.Authentication.AuthenticationException: The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure.
         at System.Net.Security.SslState.StartSendAuthResetSignal(ProtocolToken message, AsyncProtocolRequest asyn
    • This Q&A is probably best left to just questions about the script itself.
For your issue can i ask you to open a thread on the forum?
